Reaching Muslims — Helping the Vulnerable

reaching muslims

Bringing Muslims to Christ is one of our primary mission objectives in Ethiopia.  Tens of thousands of Muslims have turned to faith in Christ in Ethiopia, including many Imams and Sheiks.  I am proud to say that Harmony Outreach is now neck-deep involved in this effort.  While it may be hard for ordinary Christians to personally reach Muslims, there is a way you can be responsible for leading scores to faith in Christ--by helping us deploy Muslim Background Believer (MBB) evangelists!

Helping the vulnerable

Helping the vulnerable is our second mission objective in Ethiopia.  As one of the poorest countries in the world, Ethiopia has large number of orphans.  It has been estimated that up to 8% of the population are orphans.  Only a tiny fraction will ever be adopted internationally.  Our work is with the overwhelming majority who will not be adopted.

Evangelizing to Muslims

Our ministry to Muslims in Ethiopia is headed up by Dr. Eyasu, who is native to Ethiopia, and received his education in the United States.  He regularly witnesses to the lost, preaching the Gospel without fear of frequent and severe persecution.

Evangelism would not be worth much if it stopped there.  That's why our Ethiopian evangelism is followed up by a discipleship training course, that teaches Muslim Background Believers about the faith, and equips them to go back into their communities and share their faith.

Planting churches

So far, Harmony Outreach has sponsored the establishment of three "shelter churches."  Small buildings where local Christians can come to worship and hear preaching.  The establishment of these churches is only completed by heavy invovlement in the community itself—making the locals the backbone of the churches we help build.

Hanna Orphans' Home

Helping the vulnerable is our second mission objective in Ethiopia.  As one of the poorest countries in the world, Ethiopia has large number of orphans.  It has been estimated that up to 8% of the population are orphans.  Only a tiny fraction will ever be adopted internationally.  Our work is with the overwhelming majority who will not be adopted.

Harmony supports four orphan homes in the capital Addis Ababa.  Each home has between 5-8 children and is managed by an Ethiopian ministry called Hanna Orphan’s Home.  HOH founder, Hanna Teshome, has been called the Ethiopian Mother Teresa.  She is a beautiful woman of faith and love – and we are joyful that God brought Harmony alongside to hold up her arms in the rescue and life-transformation of so many at-risk children.

Jesus said he came to rescue the poor and brokenhearted and transform their lives into something new and beautiful.  These “oaks of righteousness,” would then rebuild and restore the society around them.  With the Lord’s help, we are coming to the aid of orphaned children who had no hope and “…bestowing on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair!” (Isa. 61:13)

The children in our care are raised in a Christian environment and provided everything they need to overcome the challenges they face and succeed —becoming change agents for their own country.

Harmony also provides a full-time nurse, who cares for 250 orphans and staff.

MErcy house 1

The teenage girls of Mercy House 1 are cared for, taught real life skills, and continue their education while living in a christian environment.  Our goal is to raise them to have a strong relationship with the Lord, and teach them to be independent young women who successfully integrate into the community.

Spreading the Good News

In addition to our work rescuing the vulnerable, Harmony Outreach is partnering with Word of Life Church in Wolaita Sodo.  This powerhouse church of 4,000 is doing a great job spreading the Gospel and reaching the lost in South Ethiopia, including Muslim areas, but they are very poor.

The Bible says that the Body of Christ is one body with many members—each having a different function.  When all of those members come together, with Christ at the head, we are complete and nothing is lacking.  And so one way that Harmony helps to spread the Good News in Ethiopia is by partnering with Word of Life church and providing them some of the resources which they lack.  In addition to providing physical resources—everything from computers, to guitars, to toothbrushes—Harmony organizes “friendship teams” to visit Word of Life church, where we engage in ministry with them.  We go to bless and help them in their work and, in return, we end up having a fresh wind and fresh fire in our own walks with the Lord.

In 2015, Harmony, in partnership with Legacy Christian Fellowship, Thornton, Colorado, provided 2,000 Bibles in their native Amharic language to the children of Word of Life Church and to Hanna Orphan's Home children.
