Harmony’s Work in the 10/40 Window

It has been estimated that 90% of the global resources of Christendom are stored up in North America. We have churches on every corner, Christian colleges and seminaries, Christian radio and TV, and access to countless excellent para-church ministries. Jesus said, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”  (Luke 12:48)

Approximately 42% percent of the world’s population are considered unreached people groups (UPG). What is a UPG? When Jesus told his followers, “Go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matt. 28:19-20), the Greek equivalent of the words he used were, ta ethne, meaning, all ethnic groups or people groups. A people group is basically a group of individuals who have a common sense of history, language, beliefs and identity.

There has always been just one human race. Today we are spread throughout 196 countries and made up of over 16,000 distinct people groups or ethnicities. Of those 16,000 people groups, around 7,000 are considered UPG’s. A group is considered unreached if less than 2% of its population is actively following Jesus, which means that there are not enough Christians to reach and disciple the rest of the people group. In our world today almost 3 billion people are considered UPG’s and have no idea who Jesus is. Over 95% of all UPG’s are located in the part of the world between 10 degrees latitude and 40 degrees latitude stretching from North Africa to Southeast Asia. Cross-cultural workers call this the 10/40 Window.

It’s in this window that most of the major non-Christian religions are centered, easily memorized by the acronym, THUMB.

  • Tribal
  • Hindu
  • Unreligious (Chinese)
  • Muslim
  • Buddhist

Despite the billions of lost people located in the 10/40 window, only approximately 5% of evangelical Christian missionaries are working among the UPG’s of the 10/40 Window. Jesus said “...this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations (in Greek "ta ethne"--all people groups), and then the end will come.” (Matt. 24:14, emphasis added)

At Harmony Outreach we want to be purposeful about our work, cognizant of the situation of the world we live in and faithful stewards.  As such, all four countries where we work (China, Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam) are in the 10/40 window. Our work in the 10/40 Window always has two purposes:

  • Spread the Knowledge of Jesus
  • Help the Vulnerable

We spread the knowledge of Jesus by training indigenous pastors in Cambodia, training underground pastors in Vietnam, partnering together and resourcing the evangelical church in Ethiopia and by our outreaches to university students and villagers. We help the vulnerable by rescuing orphans in China and Cambodia, by providing clean water wells to remote tribal villages in Vietnam, by providing surgeries for the poor who cannot help themselves in China and Cambodia, and by joining the fight against sex-exploitation and trafficking in Cambodia.

We want to be faithful stewards and be about our Lord’s business--bringing hope and help to China, Ethiopia, Cambodia and Vietnam. We hope you will be inspired to get involved and make sure your life is making a difference beyond your immediate circle to those areas of the world that need you most. You really can make a difference. We welcome you to join us on the battlefield.
